Expressionism is a modernist movement, in poetry but also in painting. It typically presents the world solely from a subjective perspective, distorting it for emotional effect in order to evoke moods or ideas. As an artist I seek to express my emotions rather than any physical reality.
This piece is an example of my Modern Art. Continue reading to see the full Modern & Expressionist Art slideshow.
Abstract art is a modern art form which does not represent images in everyday life. It has lines, shapes and colors but they are not intended to represent realistic objects or living things. As an artist, I have found myself influenced by many ideas and concepts of abstraction. Abstract art is found in my paintings as well as in my sculpture.

From an early age I was fortunate enough to have a Canon 35mm camera. I always had an eye for nature and especially the tiny world. Mother Nature has so much to offer us. A beautiful dragonfly, like this one shown here, doesn't like to pose for a very long time. You can't just set up an easel expecting it to wait while you paint. Exactly my point why a camera is so necessary for an artist. When I photograph objects other than nature, I look for interesting color and design or even the absence of color. Enjoy these images I have taken and imagine being there.

Creating a work space for your art is one of the most important things that you can do as an artist. Although I always drew and painted from the time I was young, I never identified myself as an artist. When I began painting portraits in oils and studying under a local portrait artist Mrs. Daniel Cox, at age 15, I found myself spending hours painting in my bedroom. It was my space!
Years went by before I finally created an exclusive space to paint in, this is when I began to take myself seriously. Feeling that an exclusive space to paint was something that I earned, I graduated to my garage. I didn’t care if paint ended up on the floor, it was my space and a place to paint my large abstract paintings. This was sufficient at the time. Not all artists need a large space, but you do need to create a place for yourself where you can just create and produce your art.
Do you call yourself an artist? For some of us this is an easy task. For me it took years before I was able to say that I was an artist, although I knew that I loved creating, painting, and drawing at a very early age. Most all children love to be creating and painting and getting themselves involved with doing something that expresses themselves artistically. So back to the question, when do you call yourself an artist? Ask yourself, ”Do I take myself seriously and am I devoted as well as dedicated to producing art? Am I proud of what I have accomplished and what I have done with my artistic talent?". These are the things that have helped me along the way to say yes, Nancy, you are an artist. Powerful words to manifest
